If you stroll through the halls of Cleveland High School, there's a good chance you'll encounter a familiar face and a warm smile – Mrs. Athena Davis, an English teacher and yearbook advisor who embodies the spirit of her alma mater.
A proud graduate of the class of 1996, she recalls her own time as a student on Raider Drive. But her roots in the school run even deeper – her mother, Melody (Silver) Buckner, proudly walked the halls as part of the inaugural graduating class in 1967. It's a legacy that Mrs. Davis carries with honor and pride.
"Cleveland High School still holds a special place in my heart. It's more than just a school; it's a community, a family. The people here, the students, the staff – they're what make this place truly exceptional," Mrs. Davis reflects.
After completing two years in the pre-physical therapy program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Mrs. Davis realized that her true passion lay in education. She made a life-changing decision: to become a high school English teacher. Mrs. Davis switched her major, setting herself on a path that would lead her back to Raider Drive.
For the past 23 years, Mrs. Davis has poured her heart and soul into teaching. Her dedication and passion for education have not gone unnoticed – in 2013, she was honored as part of the Cleveland High School Alumni Hall of Fame, a testament to her profound impact on students.
Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Davis is involved in the school's yearbook and Model UN, channeling her creativity and attention to detail into capturing the essence of student life at Cleveland High. Through her guidance, students learn not only the art of journalism but also the importance of teamwork, responsibility, and creativity.
To Mrs. Davis, teaching isn't just a job – it's a calling.
